Show 22 - Two Very Important Mindsets For Sports

This week's sports psychology podcast helps athletes understand the training and trusting mindsets. Dr. Cohn contends that athletes must maintain a good balance between two important mindsets in sports: training and performance mindsets. Most perfectionists have trouble with the trusting mindset - they become stuck in their training. Over-doing one of these two mindsets cause you to not reach your full potential.

In this Podcast, Dr. Cohn addresses questions that are of great significance to competitive athletes. He discusses which of the two mindsets are more important? The training or the performance mindset? He goes on to discuss each mindset in detail and talks about which mindset is most common among athletes. And then finally, Dr. Cohn explains how one makes the transition from one mindset to the other.

Show 13 - Entering a Zone Focus for Peak Performance

Want to learn how to get into the peak performance zone? Listen to Dr. Cohn's sports psychology podcast on why focus is a critical component for peak performance and being in the zone. Dr. Cohn teaches you sport psychology strategies to reach a zone focus and concentrate in the present moment.

All athletes love the magical, sought after state of mind known as the *zone.*This state of supreme focus helps athletes in all sports perform at their peak.

Many athletes who want to reach their peak potential are always in search of secrets to hop into the '*zone.* But the zone is really not that complicated or hard to achieve when the right mental game strategies are put into place.

It is difficult to enter a *zone* state every time you compete. No one is perfect, but you can learn the mental strategies that will help you get there more often!

What really is the zone? The zone is simply a mental state of total involvement in the present moment. I like the word *immersed* as it indicates you lose yourself (or your sense of self) when you perform, which is how some athletes describe the zone.

Being in the zone is a state of total involvement in a task without the mental burden or worry, doubt, or fear about results. So, if the zone is that simple, why can't athletes achieve this mindset every time they hit the court or step on the diamond?

Many of the top athletes do -Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, and Maria Sharapova, for example. But some athletes are blocked from entering the zone because they are overtaken by massive distractions such as fear of failure and worry.

The top athletes know how to harness the power of the zone by using thoughts and images to trigger a mindset to enter the zone.

Entering the zone may sound zen-like and magical, but actually achieving this level of immersion is very simple. When your mind fully connects with achieving a goal, such as serving an ace, attention is absorbed into the present (the here and now only). Your mind is riveted to the thoughts and images that help you execute with precision.

With pinpoint focus, fear of failure, worry, doubt, indecision, and other mental traps are forbidden from entering your conscious mind. In this state of concentration, mental distractions struggle to compete for your attention, but lose the battle.

Want to start a mental training program for 2007 and don't know where to begin? Dr. Cohn explains options for sports psychology programs for athletes.

Every week, athletes and coaches ask me where to begin with a mental training program and how to start - personal coaching, online coaching, or read mental training books.

Starting a mental training program depends on several factors such as the type and severity of mental game challenges that block your potential, your level of competition, and your commitment to goals.

The very first step in your mental training program is to identify the mental game challenges that hold you back. You may already know what mental blocks sabotage your success in sports.

However, when an athlete begins mental training with me, I almost always discover other mental game challenges beyond the easily apparent issues. It really helps to get input from an expert on this.

The *top ten signs* you can benefit from mental training are:

You do not have well-defined goals or lack goal specificity.

You are so self-conscious, you worry about what others think.

You maintain many self-doubts about your sport.

You worry about letting others down by not performing to their expectations.

You suffer from anxiety, worry, or excess tension when in competition.

You attach your self-worth to how well you perform in sports.

You lose focus or have mental lapses during critical times of the game.

You are distracted by little things in your environment.

You become easily frustrated because of high expectations.

You cannot perform with freedom or trust in competition.

Can you identify with any of the statements above? This could indicate that you could benefit from a mental training program. The next step is to determine a program that best suits your needs.

Show 3 - Two Bad Habits That Destroy Sports Confidence

Todays show helps athletes, coaches and parents understand they top two mental attitudes in sports that destroy confidence and teaches how to improve self-confidence.

There are two bad habits that many athletes today engage in - and they do it without even thinking about it. The habits I'm talking about are *not* drinking or smoking.

The two bad habits I am talking about, which kill confidence are:

1. Setting unrealistic expectations

2. Engaging in self-doubt

I talk about both of these concepts a great deal in my work, as expectation and doubt will cripple even a healthy level of self-confidence. Here is my conclusion after working with thousands of athletes from many sports:

Strict expectations will undermine and suck the life out of confidence! First, they set you up for a win/lose proposition. You either achieve or fail to achieve your expectations, which is not a good scenario for achieving success.
